Pig Snare

In June I was on vacation in Oklahoma. On the property where I was staying they had alot of pigs. I decided to try to snare some. I used a spring pole snare and a dead fall snare. The dead fall snare was WAY to slow. To much friction between the tree and the paracord. It did get tripped but I didn’t get anything.

The spring pole snares on the other hand were lighting fast. I do believe I was using Elm saplings. The first night I only set one spring pole snare and actually snared a pig but he broke through my cable snare.

I fixed that cable snare and set up 2 the next night. When I came back the next morning the first snare had been tripped and judging by the kink in the cable I must have had a pig in it for a moment. I went to the 2nd snare and to my amazement there was a dead pig in it! Unfortunately the Coyotes had already gotten to it and ate most of it. So we took the pig out of the snare and took it back to the house to take care of it.

It was definitely the highlight of my vacation.

  1. That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing your pics.

We’re just starting our field practical exercises with snaring for coyotes. Those dogs play hell with poultry around here.

We’re new to trapping generally. A couple years ago we set some Duke body grips for possum and coon. Added some live traps for coyotes – that doesn’t work at all on our place but it works well with skunk (yuck). We moved on to dog proofs for coons and Duke 550 foot traps for the canines. Steep learning curve and no short cuts that we’ve found. Just set on sign and use appropriate bait. Now we’re moving on to snaring.

Trapping is a useful skill for the homestead. Also great time to be in the woods with my pre-teen sons. They’re learning and having a lot of fun. Nothing matches the thrill for my boys when they pick a location for a trapline and come back to success. Trapping also teaches patience and diversification. You don’t catch every day. You need to work several locations and vary sets thru the season. Good life lessons.
